Description

The Cottesloe Artificial Surf Reef Constructed 300m off the coast of Perth, Western Australia was the first of its type in the world.

The body of the reef consisted of 10 thousand tonnes of granite armour, varying in size from 0.5t to 7.5t. This granite was placed from a flat top barge using an excavator. Nine strategically driven temporary works piles were utilised to mark the perimeter of the reef.

These piles also served to support the laser equipment that was used to control the specified surface gradients of the new reef. Upon the completion of the artificial reef, these piles were removed as not to be a hazard to other water users.
